Jane's Biography

Jane Wicker, began her flying career after a scenic ride from a friend in 1988.  After just one flight lesson she knew that the air was her element.  Not having any aviators in her family, they were apprehensive when she entered the field.  She attacked it with full force, paying for every bit of flight time personally.  After receiving her pilots license in 1989 she continued on and obtained her Instrument rating, Commercial License, Multi-engine Instrument and Multi-engine Commercial ratings all while working full time.

In 1989 she was given an aerobatic ride at the Flying Circus as a Birthday present.  After that flight, she knew that aerobatics were her ultimate goal, and she was destined to fly airshows.

The following year the Flying Circus Airshow, in Bealeton VA, placed an advertisement for a wing walking position in the Washington Post Classifieds.  She answered that ad thinking that wing walking would be an exciting way to enter the airshow business, not to mention a lot of fun.  Her first time airborne on the wing also happened to be her first show.  "I knew I would either love it, or be completely petrified" she explains.  She happened to fall in love with it and was the primary attraction at the Flying Circus for 12 years.  She met her husband at the wing walking auditions.  After they were married, they bought their own Stearman and created "Beauty and the Beast Wing Walking".  Jane walked the wings and ran the business while Kirk flew the plane.  They performed all over North America from Nova Scotia, Canada to Sun and Fun in Florida.  In 2002 she took a break from wing walking not because of physical limitations but due to the dissolution of the marriage.  She has continued to be involved in aviation and still rigorously works out to remain in wing walking condition.

Jane is not only a wing walker, but a true aerobatic pilot in her own right.   She not only walked the wings of the Beast but flew it as well.  She is one of a few wing walkers that is actually qualified to fly the wing walking mount.   She has held a surface level waiver from the FAA and is an accomplished competition pilot.  She is also a singer and has even sung the National Anthem at airshows.  Jane has been seen and heard on several local and national broadcasts, such as The Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel, The History Channel, National Geographic TV, ESPN, Speed Vision, the Sunday Today Show, The G. Gordon Liddy Show, and many other publications as well.

Jane's wing walking is still today one of a kind.  She remains the only female wing walker in North America that not only hangs from the N strut, but sits on the bottom of the airplane during the inverted pass.  She also is one of just a few wing walkers in the world who transitions across the wings without benefit of a safety line.

Jane currently works as a Budget Analyst at the FAA and is a Freelance writer.  She loves the ability to share her experiences as well as spawn new dreams and encourage others to pursue their goals not only in aviation, but life as well.
